The other way around though: the common name *Giel* (or Gillis) can occur in the Church records as Aegidius but also as Michael, depending on what the parish priest made of *Giel* when parents brought their child to church for baptism.

We had an uncle 'Gidi' [and you would expect his full name to be Gideon or similar] but his full christian name was also Egidius.
