In one of the older (ca. 1680) baptism book of Mill they write Reijn Jordens and Margarita Reijnen, what means, the wife of Reijn, while she is named indeedly Reijnen d.v. Reijn. That is a luckly incident.

Thanks everyone for their thoughts, having read the bap records of the two, Maria and Joanna, the parents are different Joanna born 21 Jan 1671 father Reijn Jordens and mother Margarita Reijnen, Mill,which is more in line. Geni world has Maria born 29 Aug 1670 Mill, married 1692 Arnoldus Hendrickx Clomp and died 1726. Their record says Reijnerus Jordens and Margarita Reijnen but the bap record I found the parents are Reijn Jans and Margarita Reijns, Mill. So who can be right?
If they not sisters then some outside sources are wrong in their information. What does one do to keep the family lines correct?

Maria and Joanna definitively cannot have been sisters. The second sister would have been born after 18 weeks gestation, less than half the normal period. Even today a baby that small does not stay alive, let alone in the 17-th century. And dead children were not baptist and given names.

Hi Diane, surnames were not fixed in the Netherlands before 1814. So it is very well possible that children from one marriage are baptized with the father using different surnames. Actually, they are not even surnames, because for example both the Maria and Joanna who are subject of your questions would have been called with patronym Reijnen from the day they were born and not with patronym Jans or Jordens. Simply because they were daughter of Reijn (Reijnen means (grand)son/(grand)daughter/wife of Reijn, Jordens means (grand)son/(grand)daughter/wife of Jorden, Jans means (grand)son/(grand)daughter/wife of Jan).

To your question, my answer would be: not sure. The different patronyms Jans and Jordens and the fact that the baptisms were only 5 months apart also is suspicious. Roland Zwiebel, a genealogist that did thorough research on families living in Mill in 17th and 18th century, considers them to be sisters, but I have my doubts. And I see that Jan, in his Lange book, also has them as daughters of different parents

I can not give you an answer to your question as I have not looked into the various birth, hence I would advice you in future to set out your question more fully, with data and for instance witnesses at the birth.
What I can mention to you is that in The Land van Cuijk the priest usually in stead of surnames used the fathers first name, sometimes however he used the old surname. Reijn Jorden for instance - Jorden could be a surname but I think it is his fathers first name. The same with Margarita Reijnen - Reijnen could be the surname or it is her fathers first name ?
