Delivered by Rootes Securities (Speke) between 21Mar44 and 16Apr44. This was the last Halifax V reported missing from No.161 Sqdn and probably the last Halifax of its type to be lost on a Bomber Command duty. Part of a late production run of Mk.Vs built by Rootes Securities. LL388 was initially assigned to No.161 Sqdn and later transferred to No.138 Sqdn before being taken back on charge by No.161 Sqdn. Most of the aircraft from this production run were allocated to either Airborne Support Squadrons, or Conversion Units. Airborne 2156 28Aug44 from Tempsford on OPERATION HENDRICK 1.Six containers and three packages were intended for this operation and three agents and one package were intended for OPERATION STALKING. Struck by 20mm shells, fragments of which killed one of the agents and badly injured the Navigator W/O Slade. Crashed at Hedel apx 4 km N of S-Hertogenbosch. F/L Green was wounded and taken PoW with four other crew members. W/O Slade died of his wounds 30Aug44 and is buried at Engelen just S of Hedel. F/O Dean, the Bomb Aimer, was the other crew member killed. The three Dutch agents on board were J.M.Van der Meer (Stalking), K.Buitendijk (Fishing) and G.Kroon (Skating). The latter was the agent killed by the shell-fire on board but the other two managed to evade. It was the loss of a very experienced crew.
