Communicanten/Confirmation

Kevin Strattan vertelde op 6 maart 2017 om 21:40 uur
Sorry, I don't know Dutch, just English. I'm composing a chart for my son for 7 generations of his ancestors. In the chart I would like to capture the confirmation dates and locations of his ancestors if I can. I'm not sure if the data exists, but would like to try and see if I can get the confirmation dates for:
1) Pieter Harmens Bouma born 24 SEP 1871 in Ureterp, Opsterland, Friesland, Netherlands
2) Antje Louwes Middel born 14 JUL 1877 in De Wilp, Marum, Groningen, Netherlands
3) Wessel Spoelder born 13 JUN 1858 in Ambt Hardenberg, Overijssel, Netherlands
4) Harmen Pieters Bouma born 13 SEP 1843 in Ureterp, Opsterland, Friesland, Netherlands
5) Fimke Jans Haisma born 16 FEB 1846 in Lippenhuizen, Opsterland, Friesland, Netherlands
6) Louwe Middel born 08 MAR 1841 in Midwolde, Leek, Groningen, Netherlands
7) Jantje de Vries born 24 APR 1840 in Marum, Groningen, Netherlands
8) Harmen Spoelder born 24 APR 1818 in Hasselt, Zwartewaterland, Overijssel, Netherlands
9) Hendrikje Vedders born 20 JAN 1826 in Varsen, Ambt Ommen, Overijssel, Netherlands
10) Adrianus van der Leij born 10 NOV 1820 in Andel, Woudrichem, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands
11) Gertrui den Boer born 23 MAR 1826 in Krimpen on the IJssel, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands

I'm also interested in the parents and grandparents of #4 - #11. I have information on them too, but thought I would start with just these 11 first. If anyone can help me please contact me!!

Respectfully,

Kevin Strattan

For Friesland you can search on the website www.allefriezen.nl; the site is also in Englisch. For Groningen you can take a look at http://www.allegroningers.nl (Dutch only). It is possible to use wildcards.
For Noord-Brabant you can search in the index of BHIC (this site).

It is also possible to search at www.wiewaswie.nl where you can find ancestors from all around the country. For better search options you need a membership. However, in case you have access to Ancestry, you can search there.

To see all the registrations, please visit zoekakten.nl. Here you find links to scans of the registrations at FamilySearch.

I wish you success on finding information on the ancestors. In case you can't find the wanted information, please feel free to ask. Most of the time searching for the information yourself gives you more fun...

I invite you to visit our friendly country.

Once in a while you will find communion and confirmation entries in the church books before 1811. Many of these DTB books are available online via the individual Archives or via Familysearch. Dorethé gave you already some links. After 1811 these church records can be found in parishes or diocesan archives. Not easy to gain access; need to know their religion too. Your names are all from after 1811..

Re: 11) Gertrui den Boer born 23 MAR 1826 in Krimpen on the IJssel, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands <=== There was no Gertrui den Boer born in 1826 in Krimpen aan de Ijssel.

Krimpen aan de Ijssel: Start with a search in the ten-yearly tables and perhaps start at around 1820; there is an index at the end of each year:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-X9TC-1N?mode=g&i=85&wc=9PGH-16X%3A110899401%2C114509301&cc=1576401
You will find a Geertrui den Boer born on 14 March 1829 in Krimpen aan de Ijssel. [ registration date 16 March 1829] .

I understand a Geertrui den Boer married Adrianus van der Leij in the USA? But how sure are you about her place of birth? Is there any info on the marriage certificate about the date and place of her birth? Does this correspond with the above....then you wil find her parents in the birth registration: Pieter den Boer (merchant, over 33 yrs old) and Geertje Stolk. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-X9TZ-N7?mode=g&i=241&cc=1576401
Her parents married on 9 Jul 1820 in Ouderkerk aan den IJssel.

Thank you Dorethé! I will take a look at those sites when I can. My Dutch isn't so good, so need to use translation books/software, but I will see if I can hunt the confirmations down. I do enjoy the hunt!

Mark, I did visit my distant cousins back around Christmas time of 1990. You do have a friendly country and would love to visit again, I just don't have the funds to make the trip as I'm not that wealthy. However I would love to take my kids there someday if I can afford it! When I was there I was in Almere-Buiten, Zwolle and Rotterdam. Now that I know so much more about the family I'd love to see where they were from!

Helena, thank you for your response. You are absolutely correct on my ancestor. I actually had that as an alternative Birth date, but as I look at her family more closely the 1826 birth I had for her HAS to be wrong because her brother Leendert was born 17 AUG 1826, which would be too close anyway!! I'm so glad you corrected me. I feel bad that I had my own Great Great Grandmother's birth date wrong! Hopefully now she can forgive me thanks to you correcting me! I will take some time to look at the links you provide as well, and thanks SO much for clarifying confirmation records. Say I have a question though ... the registration date you mention of 16 March 1829 ... is that the baptism/christening date ... or just a more secular government date?

I appreciate all the responses! I just wish I understood Dutch better so I could navigate the site that much more easily!!

Respectfully,

Kevin Strattan

Dorethé,

I looked at your links, that is all I have time for right now. I will try and look at Helena's links later. Although I see information confirming Births, Marriages and Deaths that I have in my tree already, I'm unable to find any confirmation dates which is my goal. I have worked on this since 1995 and have had help from Dutch Genealogists in the past who have generously shared information with me and at times how to check things out, but it seems finding confirmation records is a little more challenging.

If what you say is true Helena then perhaps I can't access the records I need online? I believe many of the family members were initially Dutch Reformed Church, however I do know as I go back to older generations some of them become Mennonites. Right now though I think most of the generations I'm looking at are Dutch Reformed.

If there is any online access to church records of that type available that anyone can share, I'd definitely be interested!!

Respectfully,

Kevin Strattan

- Birth date and registration date is not the same. After the introduction of civil registration in 1811 one was - and still is- obliged to register the birth of a child within 3 days of the date of birth in the municipality where the child is born. In research you always need to check the text in the birth registration since the dates can differ from what sometimes is noted in an index.
- The links given [ dutchgenealogy] were just FYI to read through the blogs etc.; they contain good and interesting explanations in English.
- her is another one: - https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Netherlands_Church_Records
- Finding confirmation lists will be challenging; you need to know where they worshipped etc. As far as I know nothing online from after 1811. After 1811 only Burgerlijke Stand = BS = Civil registration and Bevolkingsregister = BR = Population registration. Check via www.zoekakten.nl or in the other sites already given by Dorethé.
- Perhaps you will find some of these dates [ confirmation] in family bibles or in diaries or letters kept in the families?

I think I don't have anything to add to the information Helena provided. Church records from after 1811 can hardly be found online; I saw them only a couple of times. The website and blogs of Yvette Hoitink Helena mentioned above (www.dutchgenealogy.nl, English!) are very informative. In her blogs, she explains a lot of Dutch words. She also mentions a lot of other resources where you could find information on your ancestors and their lives, other resources than the civil or church registration of births/baptisms, marriages and deaths/burials.

Wish you a good hunt! In case you stumble upon an ancestor of whom you can't find the information you're looking for, please feel free to ask at this forum here. Although most of the contributors here are specialised in genealogy in the province of Noord-Brabant, we are willing to help out. Then please state again as much information as you have, especially when you are looking for information from before 1811 (for example names and birth/baptism dates of the children and the witnesses at these events).
